One plants an onion bulb, which is the final product like?

OK. I planted an onion bulb that started to grow in a basket. The onion was fully grown. Now, How do I know when to unearth it to get the final product? Will additional bulbs grow out of this one? What do I do with the flower that grew on the stem above ground?
