What does a cherry blossom represent in the Japanese culture?

It’s motif is present in anime and manga, in legends and stories, the Japanese temples have gardens of cherry trees and they call it “sakura”, I think.
No I did not answer myself…. I just asked what does it represent in Japanese culture because it’s such an often used motif.
